
What is Computer Use?
Claude’s Computer Use turns the model from a text-only assistant into an “agent” that can operate software on your behalf. Instead of just suggesting what to do, it can actually move the mouse, click buttons, type into forms and navigate websites or local apps, within a controlled virtual environment.
In practice, this means you can ask Claude to log into a training portal, download certificates, tidy folders on a shared drive, or cross-check a safeguarding spreadsheet against policy – and it will carry out those steps, explaining what it is doing as it goes.
For schools, this matters because so much of the working day is now spent inside systems: management information systems, behaviour logs, learning platforms, finance tools and safeguarding dashboards. Computer Use offers the chance to treat Claude as a “school systems assistant” that helps staff manage this digital workload, rather than as a novelty chatbot for pupils.

Most staff are now familiar with AI chatbots that answer questions, draft emails or suggest lesson ideas. Computer Use shifts things into a new phase: agents that can take multi-step actions across different systems.
That creates new opportunities. Claude can:

The first principle for schools is clear: Claude Computer Use should be treated as a staff productivity tool, not a student-facing toy.
Pupils do not need an AI that can navigate systems or type into real school platforms. Even in controlled environments, the risk of accidental data exposure, mischief or policy breaches is substantial. For classroom teachers, the safest early wins are tasks where Claude interacts mainly with public or low-sensitivity content, and where a human can quickly review the outcome.

A teacher might ask Claude to open a browser, search for high-quality, curriculum-aligned resources on a topic, and sort them into a simple folder structure with short descriptions. The teacher then reviews and curates the final set before sharing anything with pupils.
Similarly, Claude can log into an online CPD portal, download attendance certificates and file them into staff folders, saving each teacher twenty minutes of tedious clicking. No sensitive pupil data is involved, and staff can check the files before using them.
Teachers could also use Computer Use to:
- Populate a planning template in a shared drive with links and documents
- Reformat existing resources across platforms (for example, moving slides into a different template)
- Check accessibility features on digital resources, flagging missing alt text or poor contrast
In each case, the human remains firmly in charge, with Claude acting as a diligent assistant rather than an autonomous decision-maker.
School workflows for leaders
For leaders and admin teams, Computer Use becomes more powerful – and riskier – because it often touches live systems and sensitive records. The key is to start with carefully scoped workflows where the AI supports analysis and preparation, while humans retain control over final actions.
A deputy head might, for example, ask Claude to:
- Log into the MIS in a sandbox or read-only account
- Export attendance data for a term
- Load it into a spreadsheet tool
- Apply pre-agreed filters and highlight patterns for review
The human then interprets the patterns and decides on any interventions. Claude never sends letters, updates records or contacts families directly.
Similarly, safeguarding leads could use Computer Use to help with audits: navigating through different systems, collecting evidence of training completion, policy documents and log samples into a single report folder. The DSL then reviews and signs off the report before sharing it.
Finance and operations teams might use Claude to reconcile invoices against purchase orders, or to tidy file structures across shared drives, again with clear limits on what it can and cannot change.

Risk map for agentic AI
Once Claude can operate systems, your risk profile shifts. A simple way to think about this is to map four key areas:
Data protection is the most obvious. Any workflow that touches identifiable pupil or staff data must be designed with strict access controls, minimal data exposure and clear records of what the AI can see and do.
Safeguarding risks arise if Claude is allowed to access or summarise sensitive safeguarding logs. You must ensure it cannot overwrite records, change chronology or generate speculative narratives about children or families.
Bias and fairness issues appear when agents support decisions about behaviour, attendance or support. Claude can help surface patterns, but it must not be used to recommend sanctions or allocate resources without human judgement and contextual knowledge.
Over-automation is the quiet risk: the temptation to let Claude “just handle” whole processes, from parent communications to timetable adjustments. Even when technically possible, this erodes professional oversight and can create brittle systems that fail in unexpected ways.
A risk-aware approach assumes that anything Claude can do, it can also do wrongly – and designs guardrails accordingly.
Updating your AI AUP
Your existing AI acceptable use policy probably focuses on text-based tools. Agentic AI needs explicit treatment. When you next review your policy, consider:
Clarify which roles may use Computer Use, for what purposes, and on which devices or accounts. Distinguish clearly between experimentation and approved production workflows.
Set boundaries around systems access. For instance, you might allow Computer Use only on test environments or read-only accounts for core systems until you are confident in your safeguards.
Define logging and audit expectations. Any session where Claude can click and type should be recorded, with transcripts and action logs available for review.

Designing human-in-the-loop workflows
The safest use of Computer Use keeps humans firmly in the loop at three stages: before, during and after the AI acts.
Beforehand, staff should define the task, constraints and success criteria. Instead of a vague “sort out my files”, a teacher might specify, “Create three folders by unit name, move only Word and PDF lesson resources into them, and leave everything else untouched.”
During the process, Claude should narrate its actions in natural language, allowing the human to interrupt or adjust. This is where a co-pilot mindset helps: the AI is a colleague working on your screen, not a hidden script running in the background. Afterwards, there must be a clear review and sign-off step. For high-risk workflows, this might include a second pair of human eyes, just as you would for key financial or safeguarding decisions.
Implementation roadmap
To bring Computer Use into your school safely, treat it as a structured change project rather than a casual feature toggle.
Begin with a small pilot involving a handful of digitally confident staff from different roles. Work with them to identify two or three specific workflows each, documenting the steps, risks and benefits. Provide short, practical training that focuses on prompts, boundaries and escalation: what to do when the AI behaves unexpectedly.
Gather evidence during the pilot: time saved, errors caught, and moments where human judgement changed a suggested action. Use this to refine your policies and training materials before any wider rollout.
Communicate clearly with the wider staff body. Explain what Computer Use is, what it is not, and why you are restricting it to staff-only, approved workflows. Emphasise that no one is expected to “keep up with everything” in AI; instead, you are building a safe, shared approach.
Looking ahead
Agentic AI will not stop at Computer Use. Over the next few years, schools will encounter tools that can orchestrate multiple systems, schedule events, draft and send communications, and even monitor digital environments in real time.
Preparing for this future means cultivating habits now: clear governance, human-in-the-loop design, and a culture where staff feel able to question and override AI suggestions. It also means helping students understand that AI is not magic, but infrastructure. They will grow up in workplaces where agents interact with systems constantly; modelling thoughtful, ethical use in school will serve them well.
