A simple sequence that works across ages is: provenance, intent, manipulation.
Start with provenance. Pupils ask: where did this come from, who made it, and what evidence supports that claim? If the answer is “generated”, they should record that in their notes as a source property, not a footnote.
Move to intent. Pupils identify what the clip is trying to make the viewer feel or believe. A generated video can be persuasive even when it is obviously imperfect, because the emotional cueing is often strong.

To prevent video generation becoming “one more thing”, use repeatable pipelines that limit decision points.
A teacher-only pipeline works well for most staff: write a tight prompt, generate three short variants, pick the best, and save it with a clear label such as “AI-generated, fictional, for discussion”. Keep a small bank of reusable prompts for common tasks like “silent scene for narration” or “spot-the-mistake safety clip”. The aim is consistency, not perfection.
A supervised pupil pipeline suits media studies, computing, or enrichment. Pupils plan on paper first: purpose, audience, and the single learning question the clip should support. They then generate within a prompt template that includes representation expectations (for example, “diverse group, avoid stereotypes”) and a ban on real people. The deliverable is not the video alone; it is a short reflection explaining choices, failures, and edits.
A homework or club pipeline needs the tightest guardrails. Set tasks that can be completed without personal data and without needing accounts that expose pupils to open-ended generation. AI video can add “polish over thinking” if you assess the final artefact without the process. The fix is to evidence decision-making. Require a prompt log, a shortlist of rejected outputs with reasons, and a short commentary on how the clip supports the intended message. In practical subjects, ask pupils to annotate frames with what is accurate, what is misleading, and what they would verify in the real world.

Copyright and licensing are moving targets.
